An extraordinary new release for Lee Pylon's TSOTH Records...

The eccentric 'new age' teacher William Tillson who called himself Son of The Short Spark took classes, spoke at small fairs and events in the Hertfordshire area during the late 50's and 60's. His wife, a friend of my own mother, approached me last year with a selection of cassettes and open reel tapes that she thought I might be interested in. She also handed me a cardboard box full of pamphlets, hand typed and duplicated by her husband during the years he was active in the role that she called a 'new thinker'. Most interesting among these pamphlets was a list of recordings that he had made.
She told me that he used to make his own 'sound boxes' and record experiments onto an old soviet wire recorder that he had come by through friends at Marconi.
"He was always recording. Most of it sounded like a bloody racket to me!" she told me, fondly. "He used to go out to the local woodland and sit [meditate] for hours. He said he'd make recordings up there as he liked to do 'sonic photographs' "

Trawling through the recordings in early 2021, I was struck by the simplicity of some of his sounds. Bizarre and strangely beautiful, I feel honoured to be able to release these into the world. An otherworldly snapshot of a man and his sonic history.

I have done my best to clean up the recordings, but the primitive nature of them is part of the charm. I hope you agree.
